[Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County Receives Donation from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation Madison Heights, Virginia - Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local residents. NHN will use the gift to purchase food to help those families with food assistance. “We are appreciative of Food Lions consistent focus on helping NHN fight hunger in Amherst County. They continue to be an important partner with NHN. They care about the community in which they serve”, said Garry Friend, President of NHN. This donation will be used to purchase food to help NHN’s overall mission toward providing food to those who are hungry and have food insecurity. Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $12 million in grants. NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS receives grant from easley trust



Grant provides funding for new cooler




April 30, 2019….NHN was notified by the Easley Trust of their approval to honor the request for funds to purchase a 12x14 walk-in freezer. President Friend stated, “What a blessing it is to once again receive funding for a much needed piece of equipment. This will allow NHN to acquire more frozen products to serve our increasing base of clients. The Easley Trust is one of the local foundations which gives back to the community and region 2000 is very blessed to have them”.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS of amherst county is recipient to grants from three local foundations



Ending 2018 with some much appreciated grants





Neighbors Helping Neighbors was recently awarded three grants from local foundations: Al Stroobants Foundation - $7,150 for the purchase of Warehouse Pallet Racks & Stainless Steel Tables. Weyerhaeuser - $3,231. For the purchase of a battery operated floor scrubber. Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation - $3,947. For the purchase of a two door commercial freezer for our Food Kitchens.


Garry Friend President of NHN, stated “ The increase in the number of families we serve , has created the need for more space, more equipment and the need to purchase more food. NHN is fortunate to be in a locality where there are Foundations and Corporations which see value in giving back to the community. It is with their financial support we are able to purchase equipment which enables efficient and increased storage capabilities, as well as, equipment to keep a clean food environment. Grants of this nature, allow us to use donated community funds for the ongoing purchase of food. It’s special to receive these during the season of giving. We are truly blessed and humbled in being awarded these three grants.”

NHN recognized as one of top local charities





NHN was recently recognized by Lynchburg Living Magazine as one of the top 25 non-profit organizations to be nominated for community service in the Lynchburg Area. The community actual nominates their non-profit and voting takes place on Facebook media. Lynchburg Living accumulates the votes and selects only the top 25 to receive recognition. NHN was #17 out of 25. “NHN is only been functioning as a non-profit for 2 years. To be listed in Lynchburg Living , a highly circulated magazine in the Lynchburg Area, is a major step in name recognition, said President Garry Friend. It is also a reflection on our volunteers which serve with compassion and love to all our neighbors, establishing a strong reputation of walking the way we talk. ”

The Drew Vassar Memorial Fishing Tournament pledges support to neighbors helping neighbors of amherst co.





Madison Heights, Virginia - NHN has been chosen to receive half of the proceeds from the Drew Vassar Memorial Fishing Tournament held at Mill Creek Lake. The event will be on Saturday, September 15, 2018, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm at Mill Creek Lake, Amherst, Virginia.
NNH has been chosen to receive half of the proceeds of the event.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors Receives Gift from The Centra Foundation





Madison Heights, Virginia - Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County (NHN) has received $9,000. from The Centra Foundation. NHN will use the gift to purchase a used cargo van which will be used for food distribution.

NHN President, Garry Friend commented, “ We are excited to have The Centra Foundation partner with us in this project. The van will improve our ability to collect and distribute food in a more efficient & safe manner. The support of such an organization, as The Centra Foundation, is a great example of how a major business gives back to their community in which they serve”.

NHN’s specific mission is to feed the hungry & food insecure of our local community. Established in 2016, we focus on four key areas; nourish, educate, advocate, & uplift those we serve. Since inception, we have served over 6,500 meals in our kitchens, and provided groceries to over 1,700 (representing 4,800 household members) in our warehouse.

​HN participated in the National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. This was our first year & we collected over 2,600 pounds of food. Just a note about how it works….the Postal Carriers distributed blue plastic bags to their postal patrons this past week. They were asked to fill the bag and leave out by the mailbox on the 12th of May. NHN volunteers were assigned a post office (ours was Forest & we were joint with Highland Heights Baptist Church) to wait for the mail carriers to come in and then unload their car or trucks.

Associates Lynchburg. They collected a variety of food items in March for NHN's warehouse.



Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County receive grant from The greater lynchburg community trust






NHN receives $8,500 grant from Greater Lynchburg Community Trust! President Friend, said “this grant is for the purchase of a Warehouse Electronic Stacker, which will assist our volunteers in lifting heavy pallets to shelf level. It will not only make stocking more efficient but will add a level of safety for our volunteers”. Friend further said, “This is the second grant NHN has received from GLCT. This organization gives back to the community in a huge way! They are a well-managed trust”.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS receives check from mustaches4Kids





President Garry Friend was pleasantly surprised Wednesday at the Madison Heights Food Kitchen with a $750.00 donation from Mustaches4Kids organization in Lynchburg. Friend stated “ It is so awesome when another organization with a mission of community improvement & support gives to another organization which serves others. It fits into our motto of we are here not to compete with one another but complete the process of helping others.”

Neighbors Helping Neighbors receives a Wells Fargo Community Grant for 2017. Each year Wells Fargo Branch Managers select non-profits within their community to apply for a grant in recognition of their support to the community . NHN thanks Wells Fargo for this wonderful donation!

NHN Fundraising Campaign Underway!

Over 15,000 household letters have been sent out to Amherst County residents in hopes of receiving donations to purchase food and supplies to feed the hungry & food insecure. President, Garry Friend said “ The recent surge in people attending the Food Distribution Warehouse creates a more urgent need to restock our shelves. We are counting on each county resident to give what they can to help their neighbor out. There is power in numbers…all amounts are accepted.”



NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS PARTNERS WITH sOUTHSIDE oUTREACH PROGRAM TO GIFT A HOME TO A WORTHY RECIPIENT.





NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS met with the Southside Outreach Program to hand over the keys to a brand new home to Tanya (shown here in picture). A project started over a year & half ago. NHN volunteers Mike Ogden, Charles Foster, Garry Friend, & Jimmy Davis teamed up to leverage a Community Outreach Grant to improve the quality of life to a Neighbor. Along with NHN there was local assistance from Nat Young, Sarah Lewis, & Congressman Bob Goodlatte.

NHN President, Garry Friend said “It’s not just about food, it’s about working with your Neighbor to improve their quality of life”.

Congressman Bob Goodlatte pays a visit to the Madison Heights Food Kitchen to meet and greet NHN volunteers and Amherst guests. He made a personal donation of $1,000 as well.

Friday July 7th Neighbors Helping Neighbors received a check in the amount of $6,327.27 from the United Way of Central Virginia. This was from the event in late April “Lynchburg Cooks”. Garry Friend, President….commented “It was an honor to participate in such a long standing event which gives back to the community. As the numbers in the Food Kitchens & Warehouse continue to grow, these funds will definitely aide in our fight against hunger throughout the county and region”. ​

NHN is pleased to be a recent recipient of a $13,464. grant from the Easley Foundation of Lynchburg Virginia. The Easley Foundation was established in 1968 from a Trust setup by Andrew H & Anne O. Easley. The primary function of this Foundation is to give toward the arts, education, & human services. President, Garry Friend, said “The funds will be used to purchase a walk-in cooler for our Food Warehouse. This will give us more capabilities to accept larger volumes of food for our warehouse & kitchen guests. ” “This will help us feed our neighbors”.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County receives donation from Gleaning from the World





Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County (Virginia) received a large donation from Gleaning for the World, who gave over 30 gallons of orange juice and fruit juice to NHN this past week. In addition, lots of cases of pasteurized milk with long shelf life. We gave some out at our Food Kitchens. They loved them!!



Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County chosen to be a beneficiary from Lynchburg Cooks Benefit on April 24th





Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County (Virginia) was recently chosen as one of the “three” non-profits to benefit from a large fundraiser called Lynchburg Cooks. Lynchburg Cooks has been doing this for 26 years to aid in Hunger Relief in the city & surrounding counties. To be chosen is quite an honor and usually means a large donation from the sale of tickets & silent auction. The event takes place on Monday April 24th at Phase 2 in Lynchburg. Over 50 restaurants will be there serving a specialty dish for all to taste. It’s a very exciting event for a very good cause.

Tickets are $30.00 in advance $35.00 at the door
